The inspiration for the school was based on a literal dream. Clear waves, vibrant rainforests and rushing waterfalls set the stage for what you found then and still today when you walk through the doors of what has become the physical reality of School of the World.
Like many of our students, our founders were adventure seekers. They were backpackers exploring Costa Rica’s landscapes, dreaming of a way to make their time in the country a permanent existence. 25 years later, that dream has become a home to hundreds of travelers from all over the world.

Like many dreams, the school started small and grew into what it is today. We laid our roots down on a single lot, a pool, rented cabanas and an offering to teach travelers how to surf and speak Spanish. In the first year, we only had two official students. We did however have a constant revolving door of backpackers looking for community and friendship. Our first year taught us that the combination of learning, exploration and togetherness were key pillars to making School of the World a unique experience.
Guided by Pura Vida
Our original offerings, surfing and Spanish continue to be our top two most enrolled in courses. Both are core connections to the country of Costa Rica. Surfing in Jacó and the surrounding area is considered some of the best surfing in the world. The Spanish language and culture is the very heart of the school and its visitors. By combining these two lessons, we’re able to give students an authentic understanding of the true meaning of Pura Vida
Our students are our heart
Over the years, the physical space of the school has evolved. We’re so proud of the loving home that we’ve built. The original cabanas still hold so much of the electrifying energy that they did all of those years ago. The kitchen and common area have seen late night discos, early morning meditations, hundreds of shared meals and countless hours of laughter. Our yoga studio, Spanish classroom, open air hallways and guest rooms are the results of hard work and a vision that was never given up on.
While the space has evolved over the years, the students that fill it have remained constant. People, both young and old, from all over the world have found a home at School of the World. We’ve invited solo travelers looking for a destination to add to their extended journey, couples looking to create meaningful memories together, families looking to embrace a new culture and adventurous individuals seeking the opportunity to learn and master a new skill set.
The dream keeps growing
The last 25 years have proved that dreams are worth chasing. School of the World is an incredible space, and home to an incredible community of learners and explorers. We’re grateful to the people of Jacó for allowing us to share their home, and we’re even more grateful for the beautiful landscapes that surround our property.
