Since March of 2020, many of us have seen a change in the way we work. Some of us work entirely from home, some of us work longer hours and some of us have explored new career aspirations.
Wherever you find yourself, and your career, one thing is certain: 2020 created a new outlook on ways to work. The age-old idea of showing up to an office, with a suit and tie, dreaming of the corner window is fading. People, both young and old, have been given an opportunity to create a new space for their 9-5. With the help of technology, many companies are embracing the remote-first approach.
However, as with anything, remote work is not for everyone. Some of us crave the structure and environment that an office can offer. But, if you’re one of those people that identifies as a digital nomad and has grasped onto the flexibility and freedom that working remotely provides, School of the World might be the perfect place for you to embrace the work-life balance notion that many of us are seeking.
Here are four reasons why you should consider living, working, and learning in paradise.
We’ve got (good) Wifi
Yes, we know, it seems like a given. After all, it’s 2021 and the internet is the one thing that a virtual office can’t live without. However, we’ve all been in a situation where we expected and signal and didn’t have one. Not only is this dangerous for our social media addictions, but (on a serious level) it could impact our jobs and well-being. We recognize that our students need to be connected to the outside world. We also rely on the internet to conduct lessons and provide teachings. In short, connecting to the internet, jumping on some Zoom calls and firing off emails won’t be an issue at School of the World.
Early morning surfing is way better than an alarm clock
For most of us, waking up at sunrise on a random Tuesday to work from home doesn’t sound very appealing. However, waking up at sunrise on a random Tuesday to go surf in the Pacific Ocean, has a better ring to it. They say that mornings are crucial to setting the tone for the rest of your day, and we agree. Not into surfing? Start your morning with an easy meditation or an igniting yoga flow. Whichever activity you choose, starting the day with something invigorating will allow you the headspace to tackle the challenges and demands that might come up throughout the rest of your day.
A new scenery creates growth
We get it. Wouldn’t it be nice to never have to read the words “I hope this email finds you well.” ever again? Unfortunately, that’s not an option for most of us. Yet, just because we can’t stop working, doesn’t mean we have to stop experiencing. Travel introduces us to so many aspects of the world that we wouldn’t have known otherwise. When we travel, we’re exposed to new languages, ways of interacting, different tasting foods and new types of people. Culture creates growth in ways that stagnant normalcy does not. School of the World offers just that–culture.
Our Spanish classes are designed to immerse you in both the language and the culture that the language is derived from. Located in the heart of Jacó, we’re surrounded by everything that Costa Rica embraces in its culture, as well as the new and evolving practices that locals and visitors bring from all over the world. We’re also only a short drive away from local beaches, villages, National Parks and rainforests, which allows our photography courses endless landscapes to explore.
Life is all about balance
We’ve heard the term “work-life balance” a lot lately. In fact, if you scroll up the third paragraph you’ll see that we’re guilty of using this coined phrase. However cliche the term is, we can’t deny that it’s an important practice to integrate into our lives. Over the last few months, many of us have found ourselves working from home. This has put us in situations where separating our work and our personal lives was not an option. Between teaching our kids, adopting pets, gearing up for Zoom happy hours, jumping on conference calls and getting lost in Netflix binges we found ourselves unable to draw a line between our lives and our work. Now, as the world starts to open back up, some of us are presented with an opportunity to redefine the way that we approach our daily lives. Working in an atmosphere that evokes both calming and energizing vibes might just be the reset that you need to rediscover who you are when you’re not in front of your screen.
