Live (And Speak) Like a Local
Back in the day, when School of The World was just a dream, our vision was to create a space that allowed visitors the opportunity to fully embrace the local culture of Costa Rica.
Oftentimes, when we visit another country, our experiences are not reflective of the true communities, people and places. We knew that we wanted to create a home for experienced and new surfers to enjoy the world-class surf that Jacó has to offer, but we also wanted our students to be able to interact with the people of Jacó.
So, we asked ourselves, what better way to become immersed within a group of people than to speak their language? The result: School of The World’s Spanish Program.
Not Your Average Classroom
Our first step towards creating the Spanish Program was to have local Costa Rican teachers join the school. As one of the top languages spoken across the world, there are many variations. It was important to us to teach Spanish as it’s spoken in Costa Rica.Â
As the school grew, and we connected with more and more local families, we introduced our homestay program. Through this program, students are placed with a native Costa Rican family. They stay in their family’s home, eat and learn to cook local meals and are exposed to native traditions. Our homestay program is an amazing way to not only learn to speak Spanish but also learn the culture and traditions behind the language.
Next, we wanted to create a program that was designed to teach all levels of Spanish. From beginners to advanced speakers, we wanted a classroom that established and improved Spanish proficiency.
Finally, we developed a learning plan that was based on small class sizes and time outside of the classroom. Our small classes allow for each student to receive personal attention and lesson plans, based on their level and learning style. Including daily field trips as part of each course has created an opportunity for students to practice with and learn from native speakers.
Speaking Jacó’s Language
Over 25 years later, School of The World’s Spanish Program is one of the most established and well-respected Spanish Immersions Schools in Costa Rica.
Our instructors are exceptional at teaching the language, and most importantly, they take the time to learn about each student’s background, learning style and interests. While classroom work is critical, our students flourish most when stepping beyond the walls of the school. By visiting local markets, beaches, restaurants and shops, our instructors are able to give true hands-on direction of how to pronounce objects, how to address people and how to form responses to questions.
The satisfaction of learning how to speak a new language is incomparable. Creating a space for adventure travelers to connect with a new culture through language was and is a core value of School of The World.
