When life throws you a curveball, choosing your response is up to you. Amanda, a recent student who spent five weeks at the school, responded by embracing Pura Vida. Read more about Amanda’s story and how she found herself at School of The World.
SOTW: You were 27 years old when you came to the school, you were established in your career and you had an existing love for travel. What brought you to School of The World?
Amanda: Well when you put it that way, it makes it seem like an easy choice! In my 20s, a good job and the means to travel! No worries, right? But in reality, the path that got me to the school was not easy.
Before I came to the school, I was working for a company that led adventure programs for teenagers all over the world. The work was fun and exciting, but it was also seasonal. After taking a season off to spend time with my friends and family, I was shocked to learn that I was not welcomed back for the next season. In other words, I lost my job.
After the shock settled, I got to work putting myself back into the job market. After applying for multiple roles, I finally found a position that was of interest. Unfortunately, the role required that I have a basic understanding of Spanish – which I did not have. This upset landed me back in my hometown, during the winter months, with no job or serious job prospects.
After weeks of being unable to access therapy and mental health resources, and not gaining momentum in my job search, I started Googling ‘Spanish Lessons’. Knowing that this was a missing piece in my professional portfolio, the only thing I knew to do was address it. After tons of research, I found myself on the School of The World website signing up for Spanish, Surf, and Yoga lessons.
SOTW: Okay, so not the perfect social media story of packing your bags and jet-setting to paradise. We know a lot of people are being impacted by layoffs and job loss right now. We also understand that equal access to therapy and mental health resources is a serious topic.
You mentioned that your main focus was finding somewhere to take Spanish lessons. Why did you pick Spanish lessons in Costa Rica? Why not stay in the States or take a course online?
Amanda: You probably could have guessed, given my career path and former position, but traveling is something that has always drawn me in. I’ve always felt that traveling to a new place is an opportunity to hit the restart button, reflect, sit back, and surround yourself with a new world of places, things, and people.
Spanish lessons aside, traveling to School of The World was a therapeutic journey for me. The structure of having a full schedule each day helped ease my anxiety around being unemployed and having “too much time on my hands”. Learning new skills kept my brain sharp, it gave me direction and goals to work towards, and simply put, it was a much-needed distraction. I was able to get out of my head, take a deep breath, and focus on something other than the doom and gloom of my less-than-desirable professional situation.
SOTW: We love a good solo travel story. We’re so glad that the school offers a sanctuary for travelers of all ages, backgrounds, cultures, and current situations.
Once you got to the school what did you think about the space, other students, and lessons and activities? What were your favorite lessons, which one was most challenging, and which one did you get the most out of?
Amanda: The moment I walked into the school, I felt a wave (no pun intended) of ease wash over me. I instantly felt welcomed by the staff, my room was clean and inviting, and I so enjoyed connecting with and meeting other students.
As with anything in life, my time at the school did not go exactly how I had planned. While I had selected and traveled to the school to learn Spanish as a way to advance in my career, I quickly found that what I truly needed was five weeks of a mental refresh. I ultimately decided to drop the Spanish class and fully focus on surf and yoga. I’m grateful to say that this decision gave me exactly what I needed.
To answer the question, surfing was hands down the most challenging activity. I surfed every day I was at the school. Every day, I walked out of the ocean so physically fatigued that I became frustrated with my inability to make my body do what I wanted it to do. However, after a few weeks, I got stronger, both mentally and physically, and I started to see improvements. By the end of my five weeks, I had fallen in love with surfing. Yes, it was still hard and yes, I had good days and bad days. But towards the end of my time at the school, I was able to shift my perspective. Instead of focusing on being perfect on the board, I became grateful to just be in the ocean. I learned how to express my feelings and emotions positively, and best of all, I allowed myself to have fun. Surfing alongside manta rays in warm ocean water, that’s what dreams are made of.
You also asked which activity I got the most out of. My pre-School of The World self would have liked to have been able to say Spanish. My post School of The World self is happy to say yoga.
I love Catalina, the school’s yoga instructor. She listens, she challenges and she creates a space for all of her students to be their true selves. She fully embodies the true teachings of yoga. She’s also hilarious.
When I walked into the yoga studio on the very first day, I could not even jump my feet up to my hands. Five weeks later, I was popping up on a surfboard in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with ease. Catalina’s classes were structured to meet each student’s needs for that day. If it was a rough day in the surf, she offered a more restorative class. If we started the day with a flow before going out on the water, she made sure our bodies and minds were ready for the task. I appreciate not only the time that she gave us at the school but also the tools that she shared that I still incorporate into my daily routine.
SOTW: Wow. It sounds like your time with us in Costa Rica was, dare we say, life-changing?
Amanda: My time at School of The World was hands down a life-changing experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I am so grateful for my time at the school, for the lessons I learned, for the people I met, and for the healing that I did. School of The World is doing more than just teaching Surf, Spanish, Yoga, and Photography. It is a safe space for people to transform into their true selves.
